Here is Fernando Romero, President of Vidal Sassoon Salons USA and Canada onstage with the Vidal Sassoon Million Dollar Jeans in Barcelona, Spain, during a hair show we did in front of 2,000 people at the Palacio de Congressos for the annual Luis Llongueras Journadas, November 1980.

You can just see the Vidal Sassoon Logo made of real diamonds by De Beers in this photo. One day I will scan and put up some more photos from this show for which we all worked so hard, we almost missed seeing the Gaudis. Decorative Braids Worn Like A Necklace – 1992

Decorative Braids Worn Like A Necklace - 1992

Photo: Unknown

Simon Forbes, the man who invented hair extensions, gave us these decorative braids, using extensions.  In 1992. They were twisted, looped, draped and plaited to be worn like a necklace on the head. Each style was crafted uniquely for the individual for that special evening look. What a great, unexpected and unique way to dress up a simple bob or almost any hairstyle. Love it.  For more on and by WorldGreat Simon Forbes, click HERE

The Orbit – 1969

The Orbit - 1969

Do you know your hair history? In the late ’60s, this look was very popular, similar done by many. There is a version or two making a comeback in 2015, so time to have another look at this 1969 version by Charles Booth, La Coupe Montreal.. It was called The Orbit and it was launched to celebrate the 1969 US landing on the moon.

Face on, it was just a cap of hair, with a heavy round smooth fringe rising up to a soft point in the middle of the forehead. It was cut right from the crown and the hair orbited all around. The back was short and the cap graduated to “V” on both sides.

The model was Keitha McLean, a client, at the time the influential fashion/beauty editor of The Montreal Star, who went on to WWD in its heyday, then later returned to Canada as the first editor-in-chief of Flare Magazine. For more details and a longer version, click here:

Sahag And Innovative Hair Color Video – 1997

Screehshots from video … Photo Bottom Left: John Sahag … Collage by helenoppenheim.com

Here is Jeanne Beker interviewing John Sahag at his creative and charming best for Fashion TV’s Real Life in 1997. You can catch glimpses of Dario Arias, Albert Narcisse, Jennifer Chune, three of Sahag’s colorists in action, and the colorific color extensions at the end were by Santino Acquista, the fourth Sahag colorist, the person who did the color on top left, who created fast add-on/take-off color extensions. First. For those into hair history, he used a tiny comb.

Bottom left photo of this collage is the team who participated in the video, with models and me, who organized it.   Left to right: Jennifer Chune (colorist) … Dario Arias (Colorist) … model … Helen Oppenheim … Lillo Rugusa (stylist just seen) … Model … Model … Albert Narcisse (Colorist).   Photo by John Sahag. My first new blog on modernsalon.com after the re-design.   Here’s  Zig Zag.  All about Zig Zag parts.   One of the most successful collections ever for La Coupe. Created in 1977. I invented a whole new alphabet which included “ziggles” and “zisps” as well as zigs and zags. Take a look at all the hair styles, lengths and textures to which you can add a zig-zag parting and find out what the fun is all about!   Click HERE:

Wondrous Spring Blooms @ NYC Salon – 2015

Photo: © Helen Oppenheim

Wow. I was walking in the rain on 65th Street in NYC yesterday, and discovered this wondrous Spring display of blooms, a sheer delight. I stopped to photo it with my iPhone, rain and all (unusual for me to let my hair get wet!) Then I took a look at the sign, who is this, I thought? Well, well. It is a beauty salon I didn’t know was there, in my neighborhood. The name is Nunzio Saviano. I Googled later and they have good reviews, so here is the photo. Posted with congratulations on a magnificent effort. I was late for an apppointment yesterday, but I must drop in and look around. Vidal Sassoon Soft, Sexy Girl With Curls – 1981

This Vidal Sassoon long-haired girl with curls has big, soft, sexy, all-over volume injected with a healthy dose of fresh … air.

First, a superb precision cut and healthy hair, said Avram, who took the precision cutting a step further, with the formality gone and hair freed of its solid form, with no hard edges.   The gorgeous red hair was dried naturally, puff-dried, upside down, with fingers, This was 1981, new then, and certainly new for Vidal Sassoon.
