Gorgeous Gwyneth Paltrow by Sahag - 1996

Collage by helenoppenheim.com

This is Gwyneth Paltrow with hair straighter than straight by John Sahag, in 1996. I think she was one of the first celebs, if not the very first, to wear her hair this straight. This is the quintessential look that the legendary John Sahag made famous. Before flat irons.   He used his John Sahag Revitalizing Drops on Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair here, I think one of the very first people to be able to experience them; I heard Gwyneth loved them, and the look.   I have no photo credit for this photo, but it is very Sahag and I have to show this hair because it so important to the Sahag legacy. If anyone knows the photographer, magazine or event, credits will be added immediately. For more Gwyneth Paltrow by John Sahag, click

Egyptian-Inspired Amazing Nails - 2016

CND Nails never cease to blow our minds.   With over 600 combined hours of production behind them, their avant-garde art nails walked The Blond runway during New York Fashion Week for Summer 2016, a fab fun show designed by Philippe and David Blond.  The highly sculptural amazing nail designs, each one distinctive, were the perfect accessory for The Blonds’ theatrical collection which was inspired by Cleopatra, the Spinx, Egyptology, Hieroglyphics, snake and crocodile skins, gold plated wings, a scarab beetle. All were concocted with unconventional materials – like feathers, foils, ribbons, chains, gems, jewels and stones. There was even a sarcophagus nail. (Don’t ask!) CND Co-founder and Style Director Jan Arnold said: “Royal golden tones ruled, antiqued and shimmering, with accents of blue turquoise, red and green.” Now these nail treasures would impress in the afterlife!     There were draped headdresses, hair, sometimes à la  Cleopatra, but blonde, was by Oribe Hair Care, lead hairstylist Kien Hoang, Egyptian-inspired make up using lots of golds shimmered on tan skin was by Kabuki for Mac and featured a gold chrome appliqué under the eyes.  This show was a Wow. Top NYC Beauty Salons Merge - 2016

Left: Louis Licari and Rodney Cutler/Page Six … Right: Eiji Yamane and Sahag Workshop

Now four top New York City salons have merged to become two top salons.  First merger – Louis Licari with Rodney Cutler, seen here in a New York Post Page Six article, are now merged to become the Licari Cutler Salon, 693 Fifth Avenue in the Takashimaya building between 54 and 55 Streets.  Blending together Louis Licari, the superstar colorist to the superstars with a degree in painting from Syracuse University, famous for his Ambush Makeovers on NBC’s Today Show, also the forerunner of foils, and Australian-born Rodney Cutler, whose talented teams create stylish hair for umpteen New York Fashion Week Shows, also stylist to the stars and with Redken since 2002.   Will they all cut with razors? Staff dramas happening …

Starting next week, with the help of someone who worked for both, Jutta Weiss (also Cyndi Lauper’s hairdresser), Eiji Yamane and some ten or fifteen of his staff, move from the Armani building at 601 Madison Avenue to join The Sahag Workshop in their famous salon at 425 Madison Avenue and 49th Street.  Eiji learned all about dry cutting when the legendary John Sahag opened his first workshop in 1985, but some eight years later went on to open his own Salon Eiji, where he kept the famous Sahag dry cutting technique alive, along with many ex-Sahag talents, including fab stylist, Cynthia Varon, fab colorist, Dario Arias, and more.  Now they are all back.  Will there be enough chairs?! Staff dramas ahead …

Betsey Johnson’s brides from her Summer 2009 Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week show were fabulous. And memorable.  The terrific theatrics included handcuffed brides and pirates, inspired by children’s fairytales. ’80s modern bobbed synthetic wigs by Italo Gregorio for Redken Fifth Avenue wowed in pink, white, turquoise, purple, black, topped by white hats, with veils. The girly gowns were glorious. Fulvia’s doll faces using Make Up Forever had pink heart lips, a hot pink blush, white lids, fake painted lashes on the bottom lid.  Love love love everything, Betsey Johnson.  Then. And now.  More photos from this show, published in my April 2009 Peluquerias column coming soon to my Facebook Biz Buzz.   Stay tuned …

Loose, deconstructed soft natural-looking fishtail braids on these gorgeous brides at the Galia Lahav Spring 2017 Bridal Show were created by Jorge Luis, Creative Director of the Privé Salon using 4 layers of clip-in Hair Art Remy Hair Extensions layered in at the base of the braid to add dramatic length and volume. 100% human hair, of course. He described the look as a bit “wenchy” with sensual height teased on the crown.   Some braids were entwined with a contrasting color, all looked free yet lavish. The bridal gowns featured extravagant silhouettes, floral design elements, some in shades of pink, many with lace.  These and more from this couture bridal show coming soon  to Helen Oppenheim Facebook Biz Buzz, stay tuned …

Traditional brides wear veils but more and more brides are not.  These rich-looking brides at the Galia Lahav Spring 2017 Couture Bridal Show had gold leaf painted on their heads for a headdress effect which was absolutely stunning.  Jorge Luis, Privé Salon, first added mouse to the hair to act as a glue, then he placed the foil on top of the head, and used the end of  a rattail comb to give texture to the foil making it look like the most amazing jewelry.  Stay tuned for more brides from this collection on Helen Oppenheim’s Facebook Biz Buzz …
