This white short geometric look with interesting curly movements in a modern way is one of five styles Lucie Doughty entered for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) for 2016.  Her work, always interesting, was Nominated, one of five in the Editorial category, and we wish her luck when the awards are given at the Professional Beauty Association (PBA)  event in Las Vegas, on July 24th.  I was a judge for the Winners again this year, and know there are many talents who participated with some amazing work.  Congratulations to all Nominated.  And to some who were not.    There’s always next year …

Soft, Fashion-Forward Wearable Hair – 1987

Soft, Fashion-Forward Wearable Hair - 1987

Photos: © Geoffrey Hargrave Thomas

This 1987 hairstyle is the straight version of the Angelic Looks from La Coupe’s Innocence Collection to help launch a new La Coupe Hair Care product line which was Fragrance Free, hypo-allergenic, dermatologist-tested, pure and gentle. Charles Booth, owner of La Coupe Salons and Hair Care products at the time (and  making some great products now as well) gave some basic gems of advice,  valid today, often not known, still.   “Where, how and when to use which hair product is key and they can alter the texture and quality of the hair, making it fuller, curlier or straighter, softer or stiffer, shinier. The trick,” he continued, “is to use the right product in the right place, in the right way to help achieve that magic.”Amazing how many  do not know this, even today!  The magic here was by Kim Lepine who had that magic touch with all her hair work, making it pretty and soft, wearable, also fashion forward. At the time, most long hair was one length, so this inteesting haircut was new’ish then. To see more magic, for a romantic curled version, and an evening version, click HERE

 80th Birthday Lluis Llongueras – 2016

Archivo Llongueras

May 24th is the 80th birthday of the one and only Lluis Llongueras. Happy Birthday, Lluis. The hair legend is celebrating, also with an exhibition opening of his bronze sculptures in Barcelona.  Yes, award-winning hair icon, Lluis Llongueras, owner of 20 salons plus schools in Spain and many more in Europe,  South America, Japan is also a sculptor, a painter, a photographer, an author of many coffee table and other books showcasing his many and varied talents. Which include having done the hair of Salvador Dali – and his famous mustache – for 30 years.   He also worked with the eccentric surrealist on the famous Salvador Dali Mae West room at the Dali Museum in Figueres, Spain. Of course, he did Gala’s hair, and so many famous superstars, supermodels, Royalty, and other big names it boggles the mind. He is the Founder and Director of Peluquerias Magazine, and such a huge name in the hair world I am not doing all his achievements justice.   Here you can see Lluis Llongueras top left, his hair on a Peluquerias cover … a photo of the famous supermodel Veruschka in 1966 (from his latest book. “Ellas”) … with his long-time client Salvador Dali … the Dali mustache … his Mae West … with a Llongueras sculpture, which I photographed at his studio in 2001 … another Llongueras scultpure …  Reina Dona Leitizia, the Queen of Spain. Amazing Architectural Hair Design – 2016

A “faux bob” with an amazing architectural finish. Fabulous. Jiwon, Privé by Laurent D Salon used a ¼” curling iron in very small sections then, with a comb, she manipulated the curls into finger waves to go up to there, with just the right movements. That’s a big white flower, not showing on the other side.  For other styles art directed by Jorge Luis with this model, click HERE

Sahag Hair Ready for Fashion Shows - 1996+97

Hair history is here. Check out the hair ready for Fashion Shows by John Sahag, his dedicated Workshop Teams, and all the hair staff, who worked day and night (often way past midnight) weekends and their days off to make it all happen. “Haute coiffure” hand-sewn 100% human hair pieces by the hundreds, Sahag-style. The hairpieces were spread out all over the place – on trestle tables, radiators, and the floor of the Workshop for days, even when the salon was busy with clients. This is why Sahag called his salon a Workshop.
Top Row: Hairpieces in color way before their time for high fashion shows. These were some of hundreds made for the Gen Art “Fresh Faces” Fall 1997 New York Fashion Week Show. To see models wearing the pieces from this “tour de force” show, click HERE
Bottom Row: Some of the 157 human hair pieces in 30-40 different textures created for 33 models at the Issey Miyake Spring 1996 Paris Fashion Week Show. To see the models wearing the “modern, young, playful, abstract hairstyles” click HERE

Two-Tone Red Lips – 2010

Two Tone Red Lips

Photo: Helen Oppenheim

Red lips were hot news for Fall. And forever.  For something different, try these two-tone red lips by Makky for MAC Cosmetics, as seen at the Nanette Lepore Fall 2010 NY Fashion Week show. He used MAC’s Magenta Lip Pencil on the top, Lip Forever, a burgundy, on the bottom. Interesting but subtle. TDF. For some great hair and more lips from this show, click HERE
