I like to remember John Sahag (1952-2005)  as in this photo I took of him when he beamed at me during a Wednesday Night Creative Evening with his “kids” in 1996.  June 15  2016 is eleven years since he left us, far too soon.  This collage is by Pascalain Gianello and you can see many more collages of Sahag, some by me, many by Gianello, the King of Collages, if you click HERE

Frida Kahlo Painting & Photo – 1941/2016

Frida Kahlo Painting & Photo - 1941/2016

Left: Frida Kahlo Self Portrait. Right: Franco De Simone. Collage by helenoppenheim.com

The photo on the right, by Franco De Simone, is a brilliant photographic interpretation of Frida Kahlo’s Self Portrait With Braid, a 1941 painting.  “I photograph what I can not paint and I paint what I can not photograph,”  Franco de Simone said of his portraits of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Stalin, Karl Marx and the American man with a hat re-imagined in his latest Exhibition Frida Kahlo, “An Illustrated Life” opening at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery in Toronto, July 7.  Frida Kahlo, the Mexican surrealist cult artist with one famous eyebrow (1907-1954) painted some 200 vivid, extraordinary self portraits full of symbolism and wit, often with incredible concoctions arranged on her head, many Mexican-influenced, many purely eccentric, usually with a touch of royalty.  Even when ill, which was often because a streetcar crash at 18 left her in constant pain for the rest of her life, her hair was dressed as if for a fiesta. Her signature accessories – ribbons, flowers, and jewelry, all braided into the hair are always inspirational. For the MUST-SEE video by Franco De Simone, click HERE

Love love love Antonio Lopez illustrations. Here are his “High-Heeled Sneakers” from 1976. So far ahead of his time with sneakers, just as he was with hair and fashions. There are some extraordinary “Shoe Metamorphosis” illustrations in the extraordinary book, “Antonio’s Girls” by the major American fashion illustration like no other (1943-1987.)  For more totally amazing illustrations from way back then but still totally today, click HERE

Hair history is here with these Kiss Curl extravaganzas. And what fun they both are. On the left, the hair was by Jeanne Braa for Paul Mitchelll, as in one of my Peluquerias columns, early 90s. On the right, the supermodel icon Veruschka with kiss curls created in 1966 by Lluis Llongueras, as in his book “Ellas” published in Barcelona, 2015.

NAHA. Knitted, Quilted Hair – 2016

Photo: © Keith Bryce

“The hair here was inspired by knitting with quilted textures, so on trend in the fashion world right now,” says Ammon Carver, Ammon Carver Studio, of this short, tufted look created on long hair to look like short hair, one of his looks nominated in the Texture category for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA.)  “The best thing about this is that you can do the knitted technique in specific areas of the head, or all over the head, like here.” He started by smoothing the hair back, then applied netting over the hair, securing the edges with clips. Using a crochet hook, beginning at the front, he pulled loops through the netting, worked his way back towards the nape, securing the netting with pins. “The technique takes on a unique “undone” texture every time, never looking exactly the same twice,” says the innovative hairstylist, who is the L’Anza Global Creative Director, and was nominated in many categories, for NAHA 2016. Congratulations, Ammon. You should win at least one award. The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) event takes place July 24th in Las Vegas. Beauty Professionals, purchase tickets HERE
