Movie To See. Marguerite. “Cover Your Ears and Open Your Heart.” Opening Friday March 11. New York at the Paris Theatre. Winner of nine César Awards, including Best Actress for a touching, magnificent Catherine Frot who plays an opera singer who can’t sing because she is tone deaf, but doesn’t know it. I laughed. I cried. I was touched. Marguerite Dumont is loosely based on the tone-deaf American Socialite, Florence Foster Jenkins but she is transplanted to a gorgeous castle near Paris in the ’20s (actually filmed in a castle just outside Prague.) I was transported to another world. Everyone and everything in this marvelous French movie directed by Xavier Gianoli, who took 10 years to get it to the screen, is spectacularly wonderful – the ambience, sets, fashions, cast, acting.
