Avant Garde Hair by NAHA Finalist – 2023

Photos: Damien Carney

The inspiration for this “Euphoria Hair Collection” by Anakin Chan of Bubbles Salon, was a futuristic garden.  “I was trying to think outside the box to make the hair look like plastic with some transparency so you can see the hair through the light,” the artist said.   “The lighting for the photo shoot was also critical because I wanted to see the shapes.”

Nominated as an Avant Garde Finalist for the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) 34th annual North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHS) for 2023, he first cut a piece of extension, laid it flat and saturated it with Mod Podge (an all-in-one glue, sealer and finish) then let dry overnight.  When 100% dried, he cut different sized circles in different shapes, folding them like an origami, then glue gunned them together on a base to fit with the model’s face. Congratulations to Anakin and to all the Finalists.

Macramé and Kintsugi Hair Art – 2023

Macramé and Kintsugi Hair Art – 2023

Photos: Takashi Imai

Roberto Perozzi, Italian-born, owner of the RPH Salon in Tokyo, has created an inspirational avant-garde hair art collection called “Lark’s Head” which is the name of the basic flat knot of Macramé, the patterns of which were adapted to inspire the looks in the first collage The two beaded looks in the second collage were inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese ancient art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer, dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum.

The pink and blue Macramé looks, which took a year to perfect, tied knots and threads in patterns, adapting the technique of Macramé to hairstyles.     For the beaded looks, he knotted cord onto the hair like a Kintsugi pottery vase, to create a broken pattern that played with contrasting colors

Futurism Hair Captured Mid-Flight– 2012

Photo: Stephem Ziehen

This couture-inspired white hair with a cool artistic edge that has transcended the artistic license is by Sharon Blain from her Futurism Collection, 2012. Australia’s whirlwind hair icon tell how it was done: “I created a ‘wig’ using various ponytail pieces placed together. These were then sewn into the model’s scalp braids to secure and create a bob shape. Yes, this is a bob.  Read on …  Using clippers, I cut small lines within the shape, then brushed charcoal eye shadow along the cutting lines to help highlight the lines and give more definition. As the model jumped, the photographer captured this iconic image with layers in mid-flight.” The educational hair artist, who specializes in bridal and avant-garde hair, usually long hair, travels the world with her Boot Camp Courses and Workshops and will be in New York, Santa Monica and Las Vegas in July, in Ireland, German and Spain in October, Melbourne in November.
