Vidal Sassoon's Marlene Dietrich – 1980

Photos: Peluquerias Magazine

At the end of 1980, I produced a hair show in Barcelona, Spain with Vidal Sassoon US. There were 2,000 people in the audience for a spectacular event hosted by Lluis Llongueras, Llongueras.   This is the Sassoon Marlene Dietrich played by a Spanish model, who had never heard of Marlene! She ad libbed to Marlene’s career signature song “Falling in Love Again” from the German 1930 movie – “The Blue Angel”   Later in the show the Sassoon Team showed their versions of the Modern Marlene hairstyles from a recent collection.   To see those, CLICK HERE and scroll down. (This is the first time this has been seen since 1980 and is part of a multi-page spread of all the looks shown from the show in Barcelona’s Peluquerias Magazine.)

Hair: Avram, Vidal Sassoon NY (who also master-minded this fantastic sequence) … Color: Edward Moore, Vidal Sassoon NY … Photos: Peluquerias Magazine, Spain.

 Vidal Sassoon's Fencers- 1980

Photo (from laser copy) by Lorraine Sylvestre

Wishing the US Fencers at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil good luck as they lunge, parry, and allez. Which brings to memory, the 1980 Vidal Sassoon Queue Collection, photographed with a fencing theme.   The hair, not for actual fencing, was romantic, the shirts had frills and ruffles, very new that season, and short hair was made long in a flash, with one movement, for her and him, using an all-in-one hair ornament invented by Avram of the Vidal Sassoon New York Salon. More from the collection, click HERE

Chic Hair Look Inspired by Soft Cubism – 1979

Chic Hair Look Inspired by Soft Cubism – 1979

From Vidal Sassoon’s 1979 Soft Cubism collection, this Sassooning for Evening chic look by Avram of Vidal Sassoon. NY, was inspired by the graphics of cubism.  The snake charmer of black plexi waves diagonally through the hair. A veil tilts over one eye, at a rakish angle, asymmetrically. Rhinestones add glimmer and glitter. The glamorous hair is rolled under and forward to frame and flatter the face with an asymmetric rolled under fringe slanting up an don the forehead ending in a futuristic feather affect. Memories, Vidal Sassoon – 1979+1980

Memories.   From my Vidal Sassoon days as PR and Creative Director of the Vidal Sassoon Salons in the US and Canada. Left, Mary Lou Green, a New York Salon Art Director with a vivid imagination, in action doing her Laser Haircut in Las Vegas, 1979. This story made People Magazine and would have made more media but we only got permission to do it the last minute when Lloyds of London agreed to insure the $9,000 haircut which Mary Lou did on a live model with Dr. Alex Jacobson, a Laser Beam expert and another laser expert, I think,  from Hughes Aircraft.   This article is probably from Modern Salon, but not 100% sure.

The large photo shows Avram of Vidal Sassoon New York, exhausted after The Queue Photo Shoot in 1980. It had been a long day with clients until late and the shoot went on way into the night and the early morning hours.

The Queue, Vidal Sassoon – 1980

There was a fencing and romantic theme to Vidal Sassoon’s 1980 Queue Collection.  The hair was romantic, the shirts had frills and ruffles, very new that season.  The Queue made short hair long, in a flash.  For both him and her.  The all-in-one hair ornament, invented by Avram of Vidal Sassoon, NY, included a brushed gold bow to cover the ponytail, clipped onto the hair in one simple movement.

Memoribilia. This image is from a poor quality laser copy.  It is from the first shoot I did at Vidal Sassoon, in 1979.  The hair featured a short cut and an interesting, exciting rhinestone visor for nights out, created by Avram.  (There were more photos of the hair but the quality of the copies  I  have are too poor to reproduce.)  The photograph was by Tseng Kwong Chi  (1950 – 1990) before he was famous.  I remember we worked on the lighting for about 5 hours before we did a shot!  He went on to become very famous, and still is today, even with a short 10 year career,  published in all the major magazines and his self-portrait series, East Meets West, is in art galleries.   Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michael Basquiat, Madonna and Grace Jones are just a few of the famous he photographed.  I had worked with him earlier, in Canada, when he has known as Joseph Tseng, but that’s another story … For more on the photographer, click http://www.tsengkwongchi.com/bio.html

Vidal Sassoon's HighHair Updo - 1980

Photo: Gérard Gentil

This is Tom Principe’s asymmetric up version from the romantic, dreamy and innovative HighHair Collection created in 1980 at the Vidal Sassoon NY Salon.

There was no teasing, two rats were placed inside the hair, which could be worn as high or low as one liked, asymmetric or simply going up high, as here.  For more on this, including an Anecdote and more HighHair inspiration from the famous collection, click here

In 1980, short hair went long and romantic in a flash. With The Queue.  Invented by Avram for Vidal Sassoon NY, the all-in-one-hair ornament, which included a brushed gold bow covering a ponytail, was clipped on to short hair with a flirty kiss curl on the forehead in one simple movement.   For more info and more for her and him, click
