Art Deco, ’20s Style Hair – 1974
This is the Deco Cut, with a ’20s influence, created in 1974 by Charles Booth, La Coupe Salons. The short cut, all angles, and very complicated was part of the Art Deco Collection which put La Coupe on the map worldwide. “This is The Great Step Forward,” Charles Booth said at the time, “so many angles but it all fit in, going against everything we’ve done before, very accentuated. If you cut a wave into the hairline,” he continued, “it stays.”
La Coupe backed black, jet black, the hair color for the Deco Cuts – great with pale faces. Deco Cat’s Eyes Makeup, by Electa, featured cat’s eyebrows, a brow not seen for a few decades at the time. For full details on the hair, hair color, the makeup, click here

Thank You’s And Memories – 1978-1985
I just found these thank you cards from various people I worked with from 1978 to 1985. Memories.
Top Left: The Perfecto! Gracias! card came with some earrings from Cartier in 1978. I had just produced a show for La Coupe in Barcelona, Spain, in front of over 2,0000 people and we were a huge success. Charles Booth was very happy.
Top Right: This card came from John Sahag. For Christmas 1985. It wasn’t alas forever. But the sentiment was beautiful. And it came with a magnum bottle of Dom Pérignon.
Bottom Left: This card came with a huge bouquet of flowers so not his signature. Vidal Sassoon had just seen my first Collection I had produced in 1979 – Soft Cubism.
Bottom Right: Memo from George Shaw, publicist and philanthropist who worked to help promote everything Vidal Sassoon when I worked there as PR and Creative Director of the Vidal Sassoon Salons USA and Canada.
More to come …
CommentThe Frizzie Lizzie – 1967
This 1967 photo of The Frizzie Lizzie inspired by glamorous ’30s hair was by Charles Booth for La Coupe in Montreal (before he opened in NYC.) The photo inspired Harold Leighton in 2014; he has written an article for The Epoque Times – “Hair Fit For The Oscars” which also shows more La Coupe photos from the ’70s to ’90s. We love the fact Harold and Epoque love our hair from the Archives on this website all these decades later. To read the online version of the article, click here. CommentShort Brush Cut With Tiny Tail – 1969
This is the Mary Johnston Cut by Charles Booth, owner of La Coupe (then known as Le Cartier.) The great summer style was a big sensation and considered very daring then, around 1969.
The supershort soft brush cut rippled up and back, ending in a delicious tiny tail curving at the neck. It was ideal for those with coarse or slightly curly hair and a great summer style still. This story – and photo – was given a full page in the Montreal Star, big daily newspaper at the time.

CommentSleepers Wide and Wild – 1975
In 1975, hair was getting bigger in Europe and in Montreal, La Coupe’s testing ground for high fashion hair trends, the world-class innovators made the hair bigger than big, and wide, very wide. With a new texture, thanks to an old crimping machine. More later on that. For more Sleepers, HairThen, La Coupe, 70s on www.helenoppenheim.com

Kiss Kiss – 1974
Kiss Kiss, from La Coupe’s famous Art Deco Collection, which put them on the world map, overnight – in 1974. This was a WWD Art Department Photo of the Week and stopped traffic in the window of La Coupe’s Madison Avenue Salon.
