Peter Gray HaIr Badgley Mischka NYFW- 2023

The hair for the Badgley Mischka New York Fashion Week Show at Spring Studios for Fall/Winter 2023 was by the one and only Peter Gray. The designers sent him the collage on the left for hair inspiration, of girls in bars and restaurants by Richard Avedon in the 1960s.

There were 40 models, and here are few of the looks the innovative hair designer adapted, making the hair interesting from every angle – front sides, back, something so few attempt to do for runway fashion shows for which we see too many safe ponytails and boring buns or nothing hair.    Peter made the hair jewelry from Badgley Mischka earrings, broken up, and fabrics from the designers’ collection with the help of Jamie Hollis, Sammi and his hair team, who burned the midnight oil!!

Big Hair Accessorized with Fashion Savvy – 90s

I took these photos in the early ’90s, backstage during a Susanne Bartsch spectacular at the Manhattan Center. Bartsch, Queen of the Night then and now, attracted top talents to this amazing event – like Orlando Piita, Oribe, Danilo and more.   I am not sure who the gorgeous model is, who did the awesome big hair accessorized with fashion savvy but they are all great, aren’t they? I think, fashions were by Todd Oldham.

Waving Beauties – 1974

Waving Hair Accessories - 1974

Photos: Serge Beauchemin’s Assistant

Do you know your hair history?  Looking at all the hair on the BBC’s Downton Abbey wave love fest on PBS every Sunday, I thought these 1974 waves by La Coupe inspired by the movie “Chinatown” maybe of interest. In the days before waving with an iron, waves took a long time to dry and I had this brainwave that one could even go out on the town wearing the decorated wave clamps I had designed – made of feathers, glitter, pearls, whatever.  Decades later, I saw decorated wave clamps being sold as hair accessories! For more great waves, click here  also see how WWD  picked up the trend!

HighHair 1980 –  Brenda
Grecian Bandeau
Sassooning for Evening

The perfect hair accessory for black or any HighHair is a Grecian Bandeau
wrapped around the head at the hairline.

This Grecian Bandeau is made of opalescent cellophane sprayed on plastic.
The 2 ends stand free form from the head, like a scarf in motion.  (Avram
who made the bandeau (and the flowers) gave detailed
instructions how to make the bandeau and if anyone is interested, I can post them.)
