Harry King, WorldGreat – 1976

Harry King, WorldGreat - 1976

Photo: Norman Parkinson

Harry King described this 1976 hair cut on Yolande Gilot for GQ Magazine as “a revolutionary haircut.”

“I cut Yolande’s hair off, many different lengths.  No one had ever cut hair this way before,” he said. “It wasn’t cut in the conventional way, apart from taking sections from the back and working forward.  Within my sections, I cut into the hair, not the ends, cutting in all directions and lengths.” This short, flattering haircut is very  modern and wearable  today, even though it was done in the seventies. Rare Sassoon Mystery Photo Solved 1997

Rare Sassoon Mystery Photo Solved 1997

Photo: Unknown

Mystery who did the hair for the rare Vidal Sassoon photo is solved. It was Graham Wren, International Artistic Director at Vidal Sassoon New York, who created the 1979 Modern Marlene as well as this version, done later in LA, after the press release. I had a rare lapse in memory!  To follow the Facebook post on the search, CLICK HERE.  I think the model is Margaret Cullen  The magazine is still unknown and the photographer.   To see all the photos in the Soft Cubism album, CLICK HERE

Vidal Sassoon Gold Lamé RagSet – 1981

Vidal Sassoon Gold Lamé RagSet - 1981

Photos: Lorraine Sylvestre

Hair History.  This is the short version of Vidal Sassoon’s P-P-Puff, by Graham Wren in 1981.  The silhouette was injected with a healthy dose of fresh … air.  The natural-looking, casual silhouette was very new at the time, not just for Vidal Sassoon but for the world.  One could go from rags to riches to get this look if the hair was not naturally curly.   Our model, Kay Romero, wife of the then-President of Vidal Sassoon Salons, USA, Fernando Romero, had her hair set in gold lamé rags, which looked more glam than rollers, and she could have gone out on the town wearing them as her hair set!  The gold lamé rags made a Peluquerias Magazine Cover and captured a lot of press all over the world at the time!    For more, longer versions and how-to’s, CLICK HERE

Vidal Sassoon Soft Cubism Hair - 1979

Photos: Lorraine Sylvestre

Hair History.  Vidal Sassoon’s Soft Cubism-inspired haircut by Graham Wren had no hard edges, all corners and points were rounded and soft.  The looks were inspired by the graphics of cubism, constructivism, modernism, futurism – and the circle, the square, the triangle. All versions here are on the same model, the lovely Susie Kozak.   For more Vidal Sassoon Soft Cubism hair for day and night, CLICK HERE
