Self Portrait Frida Kahlo, 1940
Today, july 6 is the birthday of the Mexican cult artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954.) Her extraordinary surreal paintings and self portraits with incredible hair arrangements, that one famous eyebrow, the faint mustache can be seen in a new album with many new images, just up and archived on my website. You can also read more of her story, who she was, what she did, how she survived and conquered her painful life, her bi-sexual love life. This self portrait (1940) is the black and white version of her original painting in color. I thought the headdress and hair so interesting, I used this image for an article I did in The Montreal Gazette on January 22, 1991 to help promite Frida Kahlo: Portrait of An Artist on PBS-TV. The photo on the right, by Franco De Simone, is a brilliant photographic interpretation of Frida Kahlo’s Self Portrait With Braid, a 1941 painting. “I photograph what I can not paint and I paint what I can not photograph,” Franco de Simone said of his portraits of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Stalin, Karl Marx and the American man with a hat re-imagined in his latest Exhibition Frida Kahlo, “An Illustrated Life” opening at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery in Toronto, July 7. Frida Kahlo, the Mexican surrealist cult artist with one famous eyebrow (1907-1954) painted some 200 vivid, extraordinary self portraits full of symbolism and wit, often with incredible concoctions arranged on her head, many Mexican-influenced, many purely eccentric, usually with a touch of royalty. Even when ill, which was often because a streetcar crash at 18 left her in constant pain for the rest of her life, her hair was dressed as if for a fiesta. Here are photos on Helen’s Blog from November 21 to January 19, 2015. Some have not appeared on other social media. Good reason to always check my blog in case you miss something interesting. And because there is usually more information and inspiration on the blog than on my social media posts which I make shorter.
I note most of you don’t scroll past Page One and Page Two. For new visitors especially, you do get to miss a lot of inspiration just staying on the first two pages because most photos are from my archives, not dated, most 100% relevant today, even if from the ’70s or ’80s – and there are usually other versions on the website to inspire, often with how-to’s.?Hair history is highlighted on this blog and there’s much more on the actual website, with full credits.
