 Linder's Great Graphic Fashions NYFW – 2018

Photos: Paul Morejón

The fashions at the Linder New York Fashion Week Show for Spring 2018 were designed by Sam Linder and Kirk Millar, who showed women’s fashions for the first time.  Some of the fashions were odd, grungy, aggressive, many with textile manipulations, screened motifs, great graphics, midriffs showing, some with chains at the bare waist or high on the neck -all this and more adding up to wearable fashions with difference. 24″ hair extensions were by Peter Gray, on all models, worn shiny, smooth, straight. Dick Page’s faces featured black lips.

’00s Sahag’s Grey Hair Before Trend – 2003

'00s Sahag's Grey Hair Before Trend - 2003

Photo: Helen Oppenheim

In 2003, the legendary John Sahag presented this gorgeous grey-haired look at a special event, Fuse, for the International Beauty Show (IBS) who haven’t seen a show like it before, or since. And I have been every year for decades. This was way before the trend for grey hair, which continues today, now more than ever. The style was just one stunning look on the theme of the show, inspired by futuristic butterflies, which fluttered and flew, all wrapped, twisted, knotted, some braided into butterfly shapes. Butterfly tattoos finished the looks with amazing extraordinary fashions by Gaelyn & Cianfarani. To see more beautiful butterflies, CLICK HERE

90s The 1st Hair Straighter Than Straight - 1996

Photo: Unknown

1996.  This is Gwyneth Paltrow with hair straighter than straight by John Sahag.  She was one of the first celebs, if not the very first, to wear her hair this straight. This is the quintessential look that the legendary John Sahag made famous. Before flat irons.   He used his John Sahag Revitalizing Drops on Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair here, one of the very first people to be able to experience them; he told me Gwyneth loved them.  After 20 years, the look has not dated and has stood the test of time. ’70s Hair Flicks Flicking by Raphael – 1971

'70s Hair Flicks Flicking by Raphael – 1971

Photo: Klaus Lucka

Know your hair history.  From the 1971 Femme Fatale Collection these flicks flicked softly and romantically, curled at the front of a bob. Hair by Raphael Santarossa, former partner of Raphael & Leonard in London, who married a Canadian and moved to Montreal, where this look was photographed. “A woman should be a woman, and I want to make her more woman, I love women and know to make them more so,” Raphael, perhaps the sexiest hairdresser ever, said at the time. Versions of these famous flicks made it internationally, it was such a flattering look, so new-looking then, easy to do, with the front left longer at the crown. And anyone could wear this look today – it has stood the test of time. To see more, CLICK HERE

Story Behind Famous Vidal Sassoon Wig 1965

Story Behind Famous Vidal Sassoon Wig 1965

Photo: Bert Stern

One of many nostalgia Old School Sassoon posts on Facebook, this one by Dennis Dituri, asked a question – “Anyone know who cut this look? ” Many Comments, Likes and Shares later, the story comes to light about a gorgeous and famous asymmetric wig – from Charles Booth, ex Sassoon and later owner of La Coupe Salons in New York and Canada, who wrote and sent me a tattered copy of the page:  “Hi Helen as you can see by the credit, I did that NY Vogue shoot at the tender age of 19. The model was Marisa Berenson, at the time my client. Those wigs were cut by Vidal but how they were made cut and fitted with eyelash glue, etc would fill a book. They were amazing quality, revolutionary, the amount of natural hair, a natural crown position. Putting them on a block, perfectly cutting them again and again – and a point that has always stuck in my mind is that Vidal taught me how to thin the hair on wigs with a razor, especially around the hairline. (You know razor cutting was not part of the legend, but he was brilliant at it, he once threw one at me because it wasn’t sharp enough!!)   We cleaned them with the now banned carbon tetrachloride that would knock you out if you inhaled the fumes for too long. We set them, combing them out, immaculately. I gave a better photo of this shoot to Michael Gordon for the movie but never got it back.”  Scroll down to see the Old School Sassoon post and Comments on Facebook, CLICK HERE
