Antonio Lopez Chic Fun Hat Hair Idea – 1981

Illustration: Antonio Lopez

One of my inspirations for hair as well as fashion is always, now and forever, Antonio Lopez, whose fashion illustrations have stood the test of time and never cease to amaze me. He worked from life, and his girls can be marveled at in his 1982 book, Antonio’s Girls (Congreve Publishing, Text Christopher Hemphill.) Here is an illustration for a Gianni Versace editorial in Italian Vogue, 1981. It’s a great idea for long hair with a hat – chic, elegant, fun.   For more Antonio Lopez, click here

Antonio da Costa Rocha in Action - 1997

Photo: Lorraine Sylvestre

Eighth in a series featuring the talent in action working on photos in the Archives.

Antonio da Costa Rocha, The King of Chignons, was beloved by the society ladies and major press in New York and before that in Montreal.  The Portuguese-born hairdresser, always an original, created chignons like no one else. Before he sadly passed away, far too young, he even published a book, on poetry.

Here, he is concentrating as he worked on his Swim Knot in 1977. (The photo was sent to me by the model, Oksana Dykyj, in 2013. )   One image from this Collection was featured in Italian Vogue, albeit small, but there!

Swim Knot - 1977

Photos: Lorraine Sylvestre

Antonio da Costa Rocha, La Coupe’s King of  Chignons, created the Swim Knot Collection in 1977. The hair looked as good wet as dry.   He recommended making the chignon with wet hair, then letting it dry naturally.  He made a Naughty Knottie dead center at the front, and rolled the sides.  For one version, he wrapped the head with 3 strands of braided elastic going through the Knottie.  The photo
far right made Italian Vogue and that’s Antonio at work on Oksana the model bottom left.  For more Naughty Knotties, go to HairThen, La Coupe, scroll along MishMash on www.helenoppenheim.com
