Kim's Kiss Curls - 1975

Now that Kendall Jenner wore a kiss curl on her forehead for the Met Gala in 2019, maybe more hairdressers will kiss curl to make a simple chignon that little bit more exciting … Reposted.  Kiss Curls from 1975:    Kiss curls can make almost any classic hairstyle more stylish and flirty.  Anyone can make kiss curls themselves, according to Kim Leplne, but she admitted the unforgivable makes for a better kiss curl -cutting a few tiny hairs!   “They really look chic-er shorter and it is important to remember less is best,” advised Kim, who suggested bringing a few hairs forward on the forehead, on the cheek, wherever. Photo left was published in UK Vogue, March 1975. More Kiss curls and how to do them on HairThen, La Coupe, 70s, MishMash.

Kiss Curls - 1975

Photos: Marc Daniels

One kiss curl to one side of a mid-parted chignon, the other on the cheek or two on one side of the forehead, here with a side-braided chignon. What a good idea for a NY Fashion Week show.  Something simple and better than a chignon with a bare forehead, as seen over and over. The photo on the right made UK Vogue, March 1975. Kiss Curl Extravanganzas - 1990s/1966

Hair history is here with these Kiss Curl extravaganzas. And what fun they both are. On the left, the hair was by Jeanne Braa for Paul Mitchelll, as in one of my Peluquerias columns, early 90s. On the right, the supermodel icon Veruschka with kiss curls created in 1966 by Lluis Llongueras, as in his book “Ellas” published in Barcelona, 2015.

FKA Twigs/Forehead Hair Action– 20012-2014

FKA Twigs Collage by helenoppenheim.com

I love, love, love all the forehead action and kiss curls on FKA Twigs (née Tahliah Barnett) who is an English multi-talented musical phenom – a singer-songwriter, dancer, producer, director and star performer (with band) of music albums and videos.

Born of a Spanish Mother and a Jamaican Father,Twigs is about to start a World Tour in England on October 2, ending in Florida on December 3, 2014. Check her Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/fkatwigs) for a full listing of her Concerts in countries, towns and cities, which include Paris and all over Europe, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and more. You can also download her music on her Facebook page and/or see it on her YouTube Channel. The music has been described as “ethereal, twisted R&B” (The Guardian UK) and her first full Album LPI got her half a page in The New York Times, where I fell in love with her hair, which rocks and pops with some Frida Kahlo influences, and plenty to inspire the hair world. I don’t know who did her hair, have asked around, not found out yet, will post if/when I find out. Along with any credits for the photos, which include:

Now this is an original idea.  By the great  one and only Oribe.  For Manolo’s NY Fashion Week show in 1997, Oribe working with Fulvia the makeup artist, created kiss curls in his own original way, drawn on. A beaded sculpture decorated the back of the head. This is just one of many original ideas Oribe created for  the show, which was  was held at Oribe’s Fifth Avenue Salon, with plenty of Gold Chairs,  and I remember Veruschka was present amongst other luminaries.  Time for more interesting ideas like this during NY Fashion Weeks.  Please!
