Hollywood Icon Lauren Bacall is gone. 1924-2014. Born Betty Joan Perske, after a stint as a fashion model, she went on to become a legend, although she didn’t like the word. She will always be remembered. Not just for her looks, her hair, her smoky voice, wise-cracks onscreen, but also for her most famous line in her most famous and first film as Marie Browning in the 1944 Howard Hawke’s movie “To Have and Have Not” – “You know you don’t have to act with me, Steve. You don’t have to say anything and you don’t have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.”
Here she is in publicity shots for that movie wearing the great check suit, and that hair, a beret just so, also with Humphrey Bogart, who she married at 20 when he was 25 years her senior and other publicity shots of which were so many. She will live forever. RIP Lauren Bacall
