Art Deco "Shine-On" Hair Color - 1974

This is a detail from two pages in The New York Sunday News Magazine article on La Coupe’s 1974 Art Deco Collection.   The “Shine-On” hair color (my idea!) was applied where a lamp caught the light on straight hair. Colorist Jan Hughes added the “Shine-On with either cosmetics, food colorings, or real color, whether blue on black, or lighter blonde on blonde. Everyone, press and clients, was fascinated with her method –   using the light from a photographer’s umbrella, set up in the salon, to guide her where the color would be added! La Coupe got tons of prestigious publicity from this original idea, light years ahead of its time – including a full page in Harper’s Bazaar, WWD, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Seventeen and this two page spread in The Sunday News Magazine.
