NAHA Finalist Announcement Today - 2018

NAHA/PBA

The 2018 NAHA Finalist Announcement is today, April 29.  It will take place in Chicago, at the ABS show. Live at 4.45  pm CDT.   Lot of  excitement in the North American hair world today.   I helped judge the North American Hairstylists Awards for PBA again this year. For the third time.  Choosing the Finalists was not easy.  Most times, there was not much to choose between the five selected.  Often, an entry included two good and one not good at all.  Sometimes, one amazing photo and two not good.    All three or five entered in a category were not always great.  Some were in need of a good ruthless crop.   But some did get it and entered some amazing work – cohesive, creative, technically interesting as required, and newsworthy.   Those got my highest marks.  If everything was great too – the photography, the lighting,  the model, the model’s expression and the pose. However, I have noted my top choices do not always win!   Winners will be announced  July 29th, in Las Vegas.   Stay tuned …

This fabulous stratospheric style with hair piled casually on top up to there, crimping in strategic places and wisps of hair on the forehead was one of the looks Nominated for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) 2017.   It did not win. But it is a winner. Congratulations to Christian James of Shade Studio. For more NAHA winners for 2017 and 2016, put NAHA in to the Search Box, top left of this page, and scroll down a few pages.

New Wave Pompadour Rockers - 2016

Hair that rocks. With pompadours rising up to there. And new wave movements. By Matt Swinney, Evolution, a Finalist for NAHA 2016 in the Hairstylist of the Year Category, winners to be announced on Sunday, July 24th in Las Vegas. Both soft elegant styles are seen with hard-edge tattoos, and “show how free women are today to express themselves, more free than they have ever been in the realm of fashion and hair,” says the hairstylist. For the short look, left, damp hair was gelled, old school waves were vent brushed in, making sure to lock the waves in with a gentle rock motion, going against the way the wave was trending. When the waves were dry and set, small clips were used between the waves to make the indentation more prominent before finishing with spray. Right, a new wave rocker ponytail, something very different to a classic pony, with a pompadour effect. After the blow dry, the hair was sectioned with a tail comb, along the parietal ridge, roping the section to the occipetal bone dropping the top section back after securing, combed in a brick lay pattern, then backcombed. The outsides were then smoothed, and rolled into place. “I watched the hair grow fuller, after four sprays into the pony, with L’Anza’s Plumper.”

A simple idea of many tones of red on one head by Jake Thompson, Lunatic Fringe, a Finalist for NAHA 2016 in the Hair Color category, winners to be announced July 24th in Las Vegas at the PBA event.   “My inspiration was RED,” said the hairdresser who also took the photos here.   “I love how powerful red is, how controlling it is. I wanted tone on tone,” he added, “from the background, to makeup, to the styling. My fashion was tribal influenced, and I had my designer custom style this collection to show off the varying textures and tones.”
