CommentLady Godiva Hair for the 21st Century – 2018
Taking extensions as long as they can go, in two colors, beaded, Kate Becko of the Ammon Carver Studio created a Lady Godiva look for the 21st Century which resulted in her becoming a Finalist in the Avant Garde category of NAHA 2018. Of course, you could wear this idea with shorter hair and some clothes on, but I have to congratulate Kate for these looks. Love the beading, the photos, the creativity. The winners for NAHA (the North American Hairstyling Awards) will be announced on July 29th in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

CommentShort Hair Cuts With Style – 2018
Two short hair cuts with style for those with style, by Ammon Carver, Ammon Carver Studio, NYC, a Finalist in the Hair Cutting Category of the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) for 2018. These photos got two pages in the June issue of Peluquerias Magazine. The hair on the left is a short cut, finished with panache. But it can also be worn classic casual. The style on the right is for the avant-garde but it is versatile and can be styled less avant-garde! It is easy to forget in this day of long hair with everyone looking the same, that a short hair cut can give someone personality – it can also be worn this way and that. And it should also be remembered that not everyone can cut short hair as well as they should! The Winners for NAHA will be announced in Las Vegas on July 29. Stay tuned …

CommentNAHA Finalist Announcement Today – 2018
The 2018 NAHA Finalist Announcement is today, April 29. It will take place in Chicago, at the ABS show. Live at 4.45 pm CDT. Lot of excitement in the North American hair world today. I helped judge the North American Hairstylists Awards for PBA again this year. For the third time. Choosing the Finalists was not easy. Most times, there was not much to choose between the five selected. Often, an entry included two good and one not good at all. Sometimes, one amazing photo and two not good. All three or five entered in a category were not always great. Some were in need of a good ruthless crop. But some did get it and entered some amazing work – cohesive, creative, technically interesting as required, and newsworthy. Those got my highest marks. If everything was great too – the photography, the lighting, the model, the model’s expression and the pose. However, I have noted my top choices do not always win! Winners will be announced July 29th, in Las Vegas. Stay tuned …
CommentHair Up To There With Crimps, NAHA – 2017
This fabulous stratospheric style with hair piled casually on top up to there, crimping in strategic places and wisps of hair on the forehead was one of the looks Nominated for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) 2017. It did not win. But it is a winner. Congratulations to Christian James of Shade Studio. For more NAHA winners for 2017 and 2016, put NAHA in to the Search Box, top left of this page, and scroll down a few pages.

CommentCongratulations to NAHA Finalists – 2017
I was honored to be a judge for the third time this year, for the winners of the North American hairstyling awards presented by the Professional Beauty Association. It was a tough job. Since those nominated often had very little to choose between them. I am probably a difficult judge. Because I go for the face, the expression, the makeup, the pose, the lighting, the feeling, the story, the whole photo, as well as the all-important hair. The judging was made more difficult because far too often, there was one great amazing photo, and the other one or two photos by that person were, in my opinion, poor. Or vice-versa. Also, they often didn’t speak to each other. On the other hand, some of nominated photos were extraordinary, and I look forward to see how many I gave the highest scores to actually win. Every judge has different tastes, I have found in the past, some of my very favorites did not win, but others did. I have also loved some photos hairstylists send me later which did not get nominated at all and had them published! And so it goes … Whatever, congratulations to all and good luck to all in Las Vegas on July 9. Stay tuned for the winners. The best will be published in my September and December Peluquerias columns with full pages per hairstylist and, those selected, that are not too wintry, with full pages per photo in July Peluquerias; others will be featured on Helen’s blog after July 9.
