Memories Vidal Sassoon Days – 1979-1981

Logo VS News 1979-1981

Memories. New York. This was the logo designed for my press release photo descriptions, credits and notes to press when I was Vidal Sassoon PR and Creative Director for the US Salons from 1979-1981. Cool logo, yes? And News is what I gave the press. If It’s Not New, It’s Not News was my motto!  Hair History is on my website, which includes Vidal Sassoon’s Soft Cubism and HighHair Collections (1979 and 1980) and more … click HairThen here

Hair History Tommy Yeardye – 1930-2004

Hair History BackFiles – Tommy Yeardye – 1930-2004

Photos: Getty Images, pbase.com

This is the backfile, the inside scoop, on Tommy Yeardye who was a colorful and controversial character.   A few feathers maybe ruffled but, in the interests of hair history, and with the help of a few well informed sources, see links below, here are the some interesting facts.

Tommy Yeardye (1930-2004) was born in Ireland. Before he became the Managing Director of Vidal Sassoon, he had been a stuntman known as “Muscles” and stunt doubled for Rock Hudson and Victor Mature, worked for Carmen Rollers also Glemby.   He is perhaps best known as a boyfriend of Diana Dors, England’s blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, and the scandal when Dors accused him of taking a large sum of her money, which he eventually returned in the presence of police officers. But before, this he was also a “heavy – a minder at one time for Peter Rachman,” landlord in the Notting Hill area of London in the ’50s and early ’60s who became notorious for his exploitation of his tenants, according to Wikipedia. He later married Ann Davis, a Chanel model, his daughter, Tamara Mellon was the co-founder of Jimmy Choo Couture Shoes, Yeardye was chairman of Jimmy Choo until his death. Later, Tamara sued her Mother, charges were dropped, but “maybe a chip of the old block because,” one well-informed source says, ” Yeardye wanted to open a chain of Vidal Sassoon salons in malls or wherever but that was a non-starter. He left, Sassoon sued and Yeardye counter sued. It seems he had copies of files showing financial shenanigans of Vidal Sassoon. They both dropped charges.” I won’t go on, there’s more but …

Daily Telegraph Obituary  (but know there are some errors here, especially about his involvement with Sassoon products)  … You can read more on Diana Dors here  …   Tamara Mellon, now an OBE, and ranked as one of the richest women in the UK, click here

Big News, Big Change for Vidal Sassoon – 2014

Big News, Big Change for Vidal Sassoon – 2014

Photo: © Randy Taylor, hairbrained.me

It really is big news. There’s been a change of direction at Vidal Sassoon. Some of the hair the Vidal Sassoon Academy North America presented recently at the intercoiffure America/Canada Fall Atelier in New York was casual looking, with more texture and  a modern finish, as seen here with this long layered look, captured on the runway. This is the first look I’ve ever seen from Vidal Sassoon that doesn’t have the ’60s all over it!  To the future …   For more Sassoons and more from Intercoiffure, click here:

Thank You’s And Memories – 1978-1985

Thank You's And Memories - 1978-1985

Card Collage by helenoppenheim.com

I just found these thank you cards from various people I worked with from 1978 to 1985. Memories.

Top Left: The Perfecto! Gracias! card came with some earrings from Cartier in 1978.   I had just produced a show for La Coupe in Barcelona, Spain, in front of over 2,0000 people and we were a huge success. Charles Booth was very happy.

Top Right: This card came from John Sahag. For Christmas 1985. It wasn’t alas forever. But the sentiment was beautiful. And it came with a magnum bottle of Dom Pérignon.

Bottom Left: This card came with a huge bouquet of flowers so not his signature.  Vidal Sassoon had just seen my first Collection I had produced in 1979 – Soft Cubism.

Bottom Right: Memo from George Shaw, publicist and philanthropist who worked to help promote everything Vidal Sassoon when I worked there as PR and Creative Director of the Vidal Sassoon Salons USA and Canada.

More to come …

Photo: © Deborah Samuel

This 1980 HighHair for Men photo with hair by Helen Chudoba of Vidal Sassoon in Toronto has been lost for over 30 years.   Deborah Samuel, the photographer, now living in New Mexico, found it, after a search taking months, sent it to Helen in Toronto who sent it to me in NYC.

Inspired by the famous Vidal Sassoon HighHair for Women Collection, the romantic hero is in this photo is Ross Marks whose waves and curls with height and volume rose above it all. For more on this and more HighHair, click here:

Vidal Sassoon Rag Set – 1981

Vidal Sassoon Rag Set - 1981

Photo: Lorraine Sylvestre

“Miracles can work in 20 minutes,” said Graham Wren of Vidal Sassoon, NY in 1981.   When the hair was dry, he wrapped the entire head in rags, which he got from a five-and-dime store. They were so soft one could also sleep in them. This is an idea, for short hair or long, from way back then for those who don’t want to iron or roller set their hair for a more voluminous soft airy effect, as can be seen for the finished looks in Sassoon’s P-P-Puff Collection, very new looking then, not exactly what you’d expect from the famous geometric hair cutters! Go to HairThen on this website, Viidal Sassoon, The P-P-Puff for the finished looks.

Vidal Sassoon’s $Million Jeans Launch – 1980

33 years after this photo was taken at the 1980 Canadian Launch of the Vidal Sassoon Jeans along with their Hair Care product line in Canada, Peter Niedan, the security guard in the photo, made a Comment under this photo on the website.  “Egads, he said, “that was me so many years ago!”  And he has given me all kinds of info I have posted under this photo on the website on what went on behind the scenes.

Amazing. I didn’t actually hire him myself but he was my idea, after 2 weeks of sleepless nights as PR and Creative Director of Vidal Sassoon Salons USA and Canada, and the person in charge of the PR for the launches, I had this brilliant idea of having the Vidal Sassoon logo spelled out in diamonds, by DeBeers, for the Million $ Dollar Jeans.  I had a security guards hired, with guns, for protection – one for the Toronto launch, as here, and one for the Montreal launch.  For more on the $Million Jeans and the Canadian Launch, click:
